Representatives from JICA, Yachiyo Engineering Co Ltd, MEIDECC, TPL

(Nukuálofa 17th October 2024) Tonga Power Limited (TPL) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have officially embarked on a transformative project aimed at enhancing grid operations on Tongatapu Island. The project, titled “Improving Grid Operation under the Centralized Control Centre,” will significantly strengthen the Kingdom of Tonga’s renewable energy infrastructure, promoting sustainability and energy security.

This collaboration seeks to address key challenges within the existing energy management system (EMS) and micro-grid systems (MGS), ensuring the efficient integration of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power into Tonga’s power grid. With the growing importance of renewable energy, this initiative will provide critical upgrades to monitoring and control systems, directly contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Project Goals and Key Activities:

  1. Linking EMS and MGS – JICA will support TPL in establishing effective coordination between existing micro-grid systems and energy management systems. This will optimize the performance of renewable energy assets and ensure a stable energy supply.
  2. Capacity Building for Optical Fiber Maintenance – A key component of the project will focus on the restoration and management of Tonga’s optical fiber communication lines, which are essential for the grid’s operations. JICA will provide on-site training to enhance TPL’s technical capabilities in maintaining these critical infrastructures, particularly after cyclone-related damages.
  3. Technological and Sustainable Development – JICA’s experts will work closely with TPL to transfer knowledge and skills, ensuring long-term sustainability and capacity building for local teams.

This partnership continues JICA’s history of supporting Tonga’s energy sector, having previously facilitated the installation of solar and wind power generation systems on Tongatapu. By addressing both technical and infrastructure needs, this project will enable Tonga to increase its reliance on renewable energy and move closer to its national goals of energy independence and climate resilience.

Record of Discussion on the Project for Improving Grid Operation Under the Centralized Control Centre has been signed on the 11th of March, 2024 and its implementing period for twenty-four months (24-month) from October 2024 to September 2026.

Quotes:

  • Mr. Finau Moa, CEO of Tonga Power Limited, stated: “This collaboration with JICA is a critical step forward in ensuring that Tonga’s energy infrastructure can support its ambitious renewable energy targets. We are excited to strengthen our grid operations and make substantial progress towards a sustainable future.”
  • Ms. Rika Uemura, JICA Resident Representative, stated: “We are proud to partner with TPL in this project, which demonstrates the strength of our commitment to improving energy security and resilience in the Pacific region.”
