10 February 2026: Government of Tonga signs authorization to enable disbursement of Japan Grant for TBC Solar Project

The Government of the Kingdom of Tonga has formally signed a Blanket Disbursement Authorization under Japan’s Grant Aid for the Economic and Social Development Programme (FY2025), enabling the release of grant funding for the solar power project at the Tonga Broadcasting Commission (TBC).

The authorization allows for the disbursement of grant funds, including any accrued interest, through MUFG Bank, Ltd., Tokyo, to the Japan International Cooperation System (JICS) upon request. The funds will be used exclusively for the procurement of approved goods and services related to the installation of a solar power generation system for TBC.

The grant, valued at JPY 400,000,000 (Four Hundred Million Japanese Yen), is provided by the Government of Japan in support of Tonga’s economic and social development priorities and is implemented in accordance with established financial management and procurement procedures.

The Blanket Disbursement Authorization was signed on behalf of the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga by Dr. Fotu K. V. Fisiʻiahi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Public Enterprises, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the effective use of development assistance.

This signing represents a key implementation milestone for the TBC solar power project, supporting improved energy reliability, reduced operational costs, and strengthened resilience of Tonga’s essential public broadcasting services.
